Trump’s deal drought ends. AI won’t make college less important to employers. It’s a story of boom-and-bust online education. Oregon State’s Extended Campus, or Ecampus, created a fully online post-baccalaureate program in 2012, allowing bachelor’s holders to quickly get a computer science B.S. Within a year, it was Ecampus’s biggest program. But it’s also part of a broader story across higher ed: Undergraduate computer-science majors at four-year colleges dropped by more than 8 percent between last spring and this spring, the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center found. Uncapped programs were hardest hit. Those computer-science programs don’t limit the number of students who can enroll in a major.
